Down the Danube and the wines of Austria

We team up with Avalon Waterways to bring you elegance and ease on your cruise without the crowds. Perhaps no other river conjures the imagination like the Danube. We think to of course to Strauss, but also to many writers and poets.

The river is one of the greatest in Europe, flowing through ten countries and the four capitals of Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava, and Belgrade. The tour, whose focus is on German and Austrian wine, will begin in Prague. We’ll travel by land to Nuremberg, where we’ll board our small ship. In between we’ll visit Regensburg, Passau, Linz, and Melk. We’ll spend the bulk of our time tasting Riesling and Grüner Veltliner with different producers around Durnstein in the idyllic Wachau Valley, then Austria’s different red varietals in Gols, finally kicking back in Vienna’s heurigers. No trip to Austria is complete without a visit to beautiful Salzburg and an obligatory Sound of Music Tour. We finish the trip in Budapest, pearl of the Danube, staying in Buda but making time for the great market hall Pest.
